InfraSense
Smart Monitoring of Urban Water Infrastructure:
Develops a system to detect cracks and weaknesses in aging NYC water pipes before they become critical failures.

The Problem
According to a recent NY Infrastructure report card from the American Society of Civil Engineers and NY State Council , 40% of NYC's pipes were placed prior to 1941 causing residents of NYC to lose 15% of all the water that passes through its pipes due to leaks and main breaks, equivalent to 235 Olympic sized swimming pools a day.
Our Solution
InfraSense is a non-invasive sensor technology designed to diagnose water infrastructure conditions, generate 3D visualizations of potential flaws, and provide continuous monitoring and risk forecasting through muon tomography. Muon tomography detects and observes how naturally occurring particles from space, specifically muons, pass through material in order to infer its structure. This detection process allows us to continuously map NYC's underground without breaking the pavement. By leveraging AI trend analysis, InfraSense empowers authorities with up-to-date, accessible data to enhance decision-making and streamline operations, saving time and money. By addressing water loss early and accurately, InfraSense helps protect NYC's vital water resources, extend the lifespan of its infrastructure, and ensure a more sustainable, resilient future for the city's residents.

How Might We...
HMW detect and address weaknesses in NYC water pipes before they lead to major failures?
Detachable muon detector that will provide continuous risk monitoring and generate 3D visualizations of potential flaws.
A hydropower generating turbine that will charge a battery in each detector strip, enabling the muon detector to continue collecting data during water shortages or turbine failures.
